PROJECTS

Over the years, EAI has helped agencies, companies, and communities resolve environmental issues from a comprehensive perspective, considering the full impact on water, air, land use, resource management, and economic feasibility. A few examples of our recent project successes include:

NEPA Environmental Assessments
When a project schedule was behind schedule, EAI was called in to provide the NEPA environmental assessment. EAI wrote and submitted a NEPA environmental assessment, which was accepted on first submission and approved within three days. Because of EAI’s speed and accuracy, $700,000 of project funding was quickly obtained and the City of Trinidad saved 50% on costs associated with writing the NEPA environmental assessment.

Solid Waste Transfer Station Planning and Review
Solid waste management companies have acquired a bad reputation due to fires, blowing debris, and overall non-responsiveness to problems on site. Howard Disposal was the exception to the rule but the industry stereotype didn’t help matters. Amid enormous project opposition, EAI was able to win the approval of businesses, homeowners, and county commissioners through a concerted education and outreach program. The result: County Commissioners passed the solid waste transfer station project on a vote of 2 to 1.

Coal Mine Permitting
Companies have begun to once again pursue coal exploration in Colorado. However, extraction industries must obtain numerous permits and win the support of the local community. EAI began its work with Northfield Partners by writing and submitting a Notice of Intent to Explore, which was approved without adequacy issues. With the air pollution permit process complete, EAI has been pursuing the Fremont County Conditional Use Permit (CUP). As part of this process, EAI has been successfully reaching out to the local community, educating residents and business owners about the need to balance regulations with community and economic benefit.

Natural Resource Development
How does Front Range Aggregate renew permits so that they are reflective of current and future operations? EAI performed an exhaustive review to evaluate outstanding permitting or environmental issues. Then, the company submitted Title V applications, which were deemed complete upon first submission because of EAI’s attention to detail. The client enjoys full compliance and a new process that includes ongoing inspections, sampling and monitoring.

Renewable Resource Development
EAI worked with an international cement manufacturer to develop a feasibility study to burn tire derived fuel (tdf) and design a custom tdf shredder. EAI developed an extensive business plan and cost analysis that received government funding and was projected to gross $500,000 in its first year. EAI’s successfully adopted tdf processing program has been implemented at cement plants around the world.

Environmental Permitting and Sampling
Since 2002, EAI has been working with Cotter Corporation, one of two uranium ore processing mills in the U.S. EAI serves as community outreach coordinator to make complex and environmental issues understandable to the community. Through EAI’s efforts, once contentious interactions have been laid to rest. EAI is also researching and designing a reactive barrier as an innovative groundwater remediation technique, which the U.S. EPA and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) are considering employing.
